Three great weekend competitions

England’s early season continued apace with three well-attended and competitive competitions in Wiltshire, London and Surrey.

Classic Pétanque Events’ Over 50’s Grand Prix, the second in the series, took place at Royal Wooton Bassett PC with 32 triples teams competing .

The Kent-based trio of Marcus Hickman, Matt Horrigan and Barry Wing won all five of their games and the prize money for first place. Round 3 of this popular tournament will be at Rainworth PC on 29th March.

Over in West London, the third Kenrick’s Pétanque Sunday series competition took place with Jonathan Castaing & Olivier Grau Ombrabella prevailing in the final against Ameen Miah and World Precision Shooting Silver Medallist Laszlo Nagy.

The final edition in the Kenrick’s series will be a Charity Triples on Sunday 20th April, once again at South Park in Fulham, London SW6. Check out our Competition Finder to get more details of this and other competitions.

Finally, down in Surrey, a fresh but beautiful early Spring Day saw 24 Doubles teams compete at Handcross PC in a field which included several England international players.

The Final was contested by Dean Ashby & Kai Sheffield and Becky Edwins and Tim Edwins, with Dean and Kai eventually victorious.

Congratulations to the organisers Martin Inglis & Hilary Kidd (Wooten Bassett), Ameen Miah (London) and Peter Kidd (Handcross) for running such well-attended events and allowing well over 150 players to enjoy themselves. Dedicated volunteers making our sport tick are vital. Thank you!

Coming up

Next weekend’s notable competitions include PE’s Veterans (+55) International Qualification weekend at Whitnash PC which will find England’s representatives in the CEP European Triples Championship between 12-15 July in Santa Susanna, Spain and another Classic Pétanque Events competition on 23rd March at Worthing PC where it looks like there is another quality Triples entry..

The 2025 season has certainly seen some great Open competitions so far revealing the early contenders for the principal national competitions and international representation later this year.
